Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 343 PM EDT Thu May 29 2014 Valid 00Z Fri May 30 2014 - 00Z Sun Jun 01 2014 ...Heavy rain with flash flooding possible along the Central Gulf Coast... ...Flash flooding and severe weather possible for the Northern Plains on Friday and Saturday... As a weakening upper level vortex continues to swirl overhead, conditions will remain wet across the Southeast and Gulf Coast states. While much of the activity should stay isolated and scattered in nature, portions of the central Gulf Coast could still see some more organized or heavier rain and thunderstorms as plenty of moisture streams in off the Gulf of Mexico. The heavier rainfall keeps the threat for flash flooding imminent Friday and Saturday given the hefty amounts which have already fallen over the past few days in the same areas. Farther upstream across the Central U.S., rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop along and behind a boundary stretched across the Northern and Central Plains and into the Central and Southern Rockies. Given sufficient lift and moisture just along the front in the Northern Plains, a few of the storms could produce heavy rain and severe weather. By Friday afternoon, the rain is forecast to spread into the Upper Mississippi Valley where WPC is highlighting the potential for flash flooding problems, especially across the Dakotas and Northern Minnesota. Elsewhere, an upper level trough and associated weak surface front will move across the Northeast bringing scattered rain and thunderstorms to the area Friday afternoon into Saturday. Farther south, a second weak boundary remains settled across the Southern Mid-Atlantic keeping the soggy conditions in place.
