Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 329 PM EDT Sun Jun 08 2014 Valid 00Z Mon Jun 09 2014 - 00Z Wed Jun 11 2014 ***Heavy rain likely for the Southern and Central Plains*** ***Showery weather will linger along the East Coast*** ***Much cooler weather likely from the Central Rockies to Northern Texas*** A deepening upper level trough over the central US will set the stage for the development of heavy rainfall especially across the Central Plains Sunday night into Monday as a very cool airmass works its way south across the central Rockies into northern Texas on Monday. Rain will be especially heavy across portions of Kansas and Nebraska. A nearly stationary front over Texas across the lower Mississippi Valley will also be a focus for heavy rainfall in the form of showers and thunderstorms before a strong cold front brings an end to the rainfall as cooler air sweeps southward across northern and central Texas. The development for more heavy rainfall, combined with recent heavy storms, will continue the potential for flash flooding across northern Texas, Oklahoma, parts of Kansas into southwest Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. Rain will end from west to east across northern Texas as the cold front moves steadily eastward although it may begin to stall out on Tuesday as the rain shifts eastward and northward from the Plains states across mid and lower Mississippi Valley across portions of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys on Tuesday, as rain tapers off across the Plains states. A weak area of low pressure and a slow moving front over the Ohio Valley today will drift eastward toward the East Coast. While the low will continue to weaken, the cold front will largely become stationary right along the East Coast with scattered showers and a few thundershowers expected from the Southeast coast northward into New England. Locally, some of the rain could be quite heavy. Cooler air will move across the northwestern corner of the nation as another cold front slides eastward reaching the northern Rockies and northern Plains by Tuesday morning. Warmer weather will return to the central Rockies and Plains states while hot weather continues of the Desert Southwest. Kocin Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
