Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 426 AM EDT Mon Jun 16 2014 Valid 12Z Mon Jun 16 2014 - 12Z Wed Jun 18 2014 ...Heavy rain along with strong to severe storms expected for the Mississippi Valley and Upper Midwest... ...Widespread precipitation will continue across the northern Rockies and northern Plains... The bulk of precipitation associated with the cold front moving through the Great Lakes will quickly exit the U.S. on Monday and concentrate more in Canada. Scattered showers and thunderstorms could linger into Monday afternoon along the Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley. However, another incoming frontal boundary will ignite another round of convection in the central Plains and Mississippi Valley during Monday afternoon. The front will act as the focal point for this cluster of precipitation and will meander toward the Upper Midwest by Monday night and enter into the Great Lakes region by Tuesday morning. Since this activity will be slowly progressing eastward, flash flooding could be a concern for portions of the Upper Midwest and Middle Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile in the northern Rockies and High Plains, it is no rest for the weary as widespread convection are expected for the next few days. The deepening upper level low coming in from the Pacific Northwest begins to dig over the Intermountain West by Tuesday. Consequently, precipitation will ramp up along and east of the northern Rockies on Tuesday. Flash flooding will be of concern especially in the High Plains on Tuesday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also possible mid-week for the region but the heavier rainfall amounts will be along the Montana/Canada border. Typical summertime showers and thunderstorms will occur for Florida throughout the short term period. The coverage of thunderstorms will become much more pronounced during the midday. This will also be true for most of the Gulf Coast. In addition, a dryline in the southern Plains will continue its diurnal dance and along it could fire off thunderstorms during late afternoon hours for both Monday and Tuesday.
