Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 424 PM EDT Mon Jun 23 2014 Valid 00Z Tue Jun 24 2014 - 00Z Thu Jun 26 2014 ...Very Active, Wet Weather Pattern for the United States... A few days into calendar summer, the nation is normally dominated by very warm, subtropical air, with showers and thunderstorms that form like popcorn where sufficient moisture is available. This year, the beginning of summer much more resembles spring, with cooler air banked across the northern tier of states in contrast with warmer air to the south--the very recipe for widespread rainfall. The entire country east of the Rocky Mountains will be vulnerable to the unsettled, showery conditions, with the Pacific Northwest also experiencing the cooler, wet weather--even rarer in that region. Expect the heaviest rainfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians, with locally strong thunderstorms focusing the greatest amounts.
