Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 322 PM EDT Fri Jun 27 2014 Valid 00Z Sat Jun 28 2014 - 00Z Mon Jun 30 2014 ...Heavy showers and thunderstorms with a slight risk of severe weather will occur across the Central and Northern Plains into the Middle and Upper Mississippi Valley... ...Scattered showers to continue across the northwestern third of the nation... ...Hot and dry conditions continue across the Southwest while comfortable weather continues across the Northeast... A cold front will move slowly eastward across the Northern Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley on Saturday into Sunday as showers and thunderstorms will occur mostly ahead of the front as southerly flow ahead of the front feeds copious amounts of Gulf moisture northward. Some of the thunderstorms are expected to be locally heavy and there is a slight risk of severe weather each day as well, including large hail, damaging winds and some isolated tornadoes. Unsettled weather will continue over the northwestern third of the nation as a series of upper level disturbances stream eastward, bringing the chances of showers and locally heavy rain especially across the windward side of mountainous terrain from Washington eastward into Montana. Temperatures will be relatively cool for this time of the year as desert heat remains entrenched mostly over the Southwest states with some warming expected through the weekend. Dry weather over the Northeast will slowly give way to a slight increase of moisture and possibly a few showers especially during the afternoon hours. A more protracted period of moist southwesterly flow will interact with a weak stationary from over the Southeast and Gulf Coast into the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys to produce scattered showers and thundershowers. The heaviest showers are expected to occur near the Gulf Coast and close to the stationary frontal feature especially during the afternoon and evening hours. While very warm and humid conditions will continue across the Gulf Coast into the Southeast, it will not be anything unusual given the time of year.
