Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 326 PM EDT Tue Aug 05 2014 Valid 00Z Wed Aug 06 2014 - 00Z Fri Aug 08 2014 ***More showers and thunderstorms for the Inter-Mountain West*** ***A wet period is expected from the central Plains to the mid Mississippi Valley*** For the western U.S., an upper-level trough over Nevada and northern California with monsoonal moisture in place is enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity over this region. As this trough drifts east through Thursday, Several areas of organized rainfall are likely over the Great Basin to the central Rockies within the moisture pool and areas of rising motion. For the central Plains and Midwest, a stationary front and rising motion within the frontal zone will help fuel the development of bands of showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall. The persistence of the front in the same area may lead to multiple rounds of showers and storms. Warm and humid flow to the south will over-run cooler air to the north of the boundary. Tropical Storm Bertha is still expected to remain offshore from the East Coast and out to sea. By the middle of the week, a stronger cold front is expected to arrive and move out the northeast and Ohio Valley and plunge south across the Tennessee Valley, Appalachians and mid Atlantic states. Along and ahead of the front, scattered showers and storms are expected with drying after the frontal passage. Petersen Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
