Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 456 PM EDT Mon Aug 11 2014 Valid 00Z Tue Aug 12 2014 - 00Z Thu Aug 14 2014 ...Flash flooding and severe weather possible for portions of the Central Appalachians and northern Mid-Atlantic states... ...A Pacific front approaching the coast will lower temperatures across the Northwest...but heighten the risk of fire weather... Widespread showers and thunderstorms will continue to pop up ahead of an unseasonably strong cold front crossing into the eastern third of the Nation early this week. A warm and muggy airmass in place in front of this system will allow for locally heavy downpours within storms developing over the Southeast and Gulf Coast states; However...the heaviest and most organized area of precipitation should be farther north near the anchoring surface low lifting through the Great Lakes and an associated warm front surging northward up the Eastern Seaboard. Flash flooding and severe weather will be possible across portions of the Central Appalachians and northern Mid-Atlantic states Monday night into Tuesday...and the threat should begin to shift into Northeast by early Wednesday as the strong cold front pushes out towards the New England coast. High pressure sliding in behind this system should bring dry and pleasant conditions to much of the Middle Mississippi Valley on Tuesday...which should spread southeastward into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys by Wednesday. Hot and dry conditions across the Northwest will begin to diminish as an anomalously deep upper low and associated cold front gradually approach the coast...but strong winds and thunderstorms with this feature will heighten the fire weather threat across a large portion of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. Farther south...an increase in monsoonal moisture should foster numerous showers and thunderstorms across the Four Corners states the next few days.
