The threat for heavy rains and flash flooding will continue ahead of an unseasonably strong cold front steadily pushing through the northeastern U.S.. Precipitation will come to an end as the front clears the Mid-Atlantic and New England coasts...and a dry and pleasant airmass currently in place over the Midwest will fill in behind it. The tail end of the boundary is expected stall out and linger over the southern tier of the Nation...serving as a focus for convection along the Gulf Coast and across Florida the next few days. The Northwest will get a break from the recent record breaking heat as a deep upper vortex and associated cold front gradually move onshore; however...thunderstorms triggered by this system will heighten the risk for wildfires across the region. Widespread red flag warnings remain in effect from the Pacific Northwest to the Northern Rockies. Farther south...energy streaking through aloft will help ignite numerous showers and thunderstorms over the Four Corners states the next few days. A rich plume of monsoonal moisture fueling these storms will allow for heavy downpours and could lead to localized areas of flash flooding.
