Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 358 PM EDT Thu Aug 21 2014 Valid 00Z Fri Aug 22 2014 - 00Z Sun Aug 24 2014 ...Triple-digit Heat for Parts of the South... ...Snow Expected High in the Northern Rockies later Saturday... The jet stream continues to be displaced far to the south of its seasonal normal. As a result, the weather across the United States will be unusual in several ways for the third week of August. The Pacific Northwest and northern United States Rockies can expect a cold storm to roll in between now and the weekend, triggering widespread showers over the lower elevations and snow high up in the mountains as the day progresses Saturday. Over the central states, a complex pattern of fronts will focus batches of heavy showers and thunderstorms into the weekend. To the south of the fronts, a late season spell of high heat is anticipated over Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and into the northern Gulf states. Along the East Coast, expect unsettled conditions from Virginia northward as a series of weather disturbances slide in. Farther south, some of the heat expected over the Midwest should affect Georgia before a cold front slices into that state from the northeast late Saturday.
