Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 330 PM EDT Sat Sep 27 2014 Valid 00Z Sun Sep 28 2014 - 00Z Tue Sep 30 2014 ***Upper level low over the Inter-Mountain West*** ***Showers and thunderstorms for the Gulf Coast and southeast*** The upper level pattern across the continental U.S. features a pair of large closed mid to upper-level lows. The first low, over the Inter-Mountain West, will combine with high available moisture to produce showers and thunderstorms from the Great Basin into the central and southern Rockies. Flash flood watches are in effect for parts of Utah and Arizona for locally heavy rain. Scattered to numerous showers will develop along a stationary front with multiple waves of low pressure along it across the northern Plains, followed by the upper Mississippi Valley and eventually upper Great Lakes on Monday. Additional showers and storms will develop as the front leaves the Rockies onto the high central and southern Plains Monday. A second mid-upper level low will drift east northeast from Texas into the southeast. In the presence of instability from the upper low and moisture transport from the Gulf of Mexico, numerous showers and storms are expected to develop over the Gulf coast and spread inland across the southeast Sunday and Monday. High available moisture supports locally heavy downpours near the eastern Gulf coast, and in parts of eastern Alabama, Georgia, and interior Carolinas on Monday. Over peninsular Florida, the greatest concentration of showers and storms is expected during the afternoon hours when instability is greatest. Much of the area from the southern Plains across the mid Mississippi Valley to the Ohio Valley and northeast will remain dry Sunday into Monday. High temperatures Sunday and Monday are forecast to be in the upper 80s to near 90 in the southern Plains to the mid 80s in the central Plains to middle Mississippi Valley.
