Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 PM EST Mon Dec 01 2014 Valid 00Z Tue Dec 02 2014 - 00Z Thu Dec 04 2014 ...Wintry mix of precipitation possible across the Central Appalachians and into New England... ...Much needed rain expected for drought-stricken California... ...Below normal temperatures over the north central U.S. will begin to moderate... A cold front edging towards the Atlantic coast Monday night is expected to stall out across the Southeast. Precipitation will continue to develop to the north of the boundary the next few days...impacting locations from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Northeast. Precipitation totals should stay light to moderate with this event; however...rain could change over to a wintry mix in some areas as a large dome of high pressure slides from the Great Lakes to Quebec and cold air filters down the eastern side of the Appalachians. The greatest threat for any snow...sleet...or freezing rain will be from the Central Appalachians to New England. Light rains and higher elevation snows will continue to develop around a frontal boundary draped through Oregon and the Intermountain West. Farther south...a Pacific system approaching the coast will bring much needed moderate to heavy rains into drought-stricken regions of California. Above normal temperatures will keep snow confined to the higher peaks of the Sierra Nevada range. The Pacific system is expected to weaken while moving onshore...but should still produce some light to moderate precipitation across portions of the Great Basin and Southwest. Elsewhere across the Nation...below normal temperatures across the north central U.S. will begin to moderate as a large surface high over the region slides northeastward.
