Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 345 PM EST Mon Dec 08 2014 Valid 00Z Tue Dec 09 2014 - 00Z Thu Dec 11 2014 ...Heavy rain and snow expected with a coastal low deepening off the Eastern Seaboard... ...A series of Pacific systems will bring soaking rains to the Pacific Northwest... Upper energy phasing and amplifying over the Eastern U.S. will help ramp up a surface low spinning off the Carolina coast Monday evening. The low is expected to rapidly deepen while steadily tracking towards the southern New England coast Monday night into Tuesday. Strong winds surrounding the strengthening storm will feed an abundance of Atlantic moisture inland...fueling a wide swath of precipitation across the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic states. Heavy rains and flash flooding will threaten locations closer to the coast...while significant snowfall will be possible farther inland. A transition zone of sleet and freezing rain will be possible in-between the heavy rain and snow. The storm will be reluctant to depart the coast...leading to another day of widespread precipitation across the northeastern quarter of the Nation on Wednesday. A series of Pacific systems approaching the coast will keep conditions wet across the northwestern U.S. early this week. Surges of moisture with each system will produce periods of heavy rains across the Pacific Northwest...especially along the favored slopes of the terrain. Above normal temperatures in the region should keep snow confined to the higher elevations of the Washington Cascades. Gerhardt Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
