Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 228 AM EST Sun Dec 28 2014 Valid 12Z Sun Dec 28 2014 - 12Z Tue Dec 30 2014 ...Wet and soggy conditions will be slow to clear the Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic states... ...Bitter cold expected behind an arctic boundary plunging through the north central U.S.... Widespread shower activity will continue to develop along a cold front edging towards the Eastern Seaboard on Sunday. An abundance of Gulf Moisture feeding into the precipitation will fuel heavy rains with embedded thunderstorms from the Central Gulf Coast to the Southern Appalachians. Heavier and more organized rains will also be possible near a surface wave along the boundary as it lifts from the Tennessee Valley to the Mid-Atlantic coast. The northern portion of the front will push well out into the Atlantic by Monday morning...but the southern portion is expected to stall out and cause another wet and soggy day across the Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic states. Strong high pressure nosing down from Canada will plunge an arctic boundary southward through the north central U.S. on Sunday. Gusty winds and plummeting temperatures behind the front will make for blustery conditions from the Northwest to the Central Plains. Also adding to the bitter conditions...energy aloft and orographic effects will trigger widespread snows across the northwestern quarter of the Nation. The arctic plunge is expected to spill over the Rockies...leaving behind below normal temperatures across much of the western half of the Country by the middle of the week.
