Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 308 PM EST Sat Feb 07 2015 Valid 00Z Sun Feb 08 2015 - 00Z Tue Feb 10 2015 ...More rain and another strong Pacific storm is expected to affect northern California into the Pacific Northwest... ...A long duration snowstorm is expected to bring heavy snow amounts to portions of New York and New England... ...Mild to warm temperatures for the Rockies, Southwest and Southern Plains... Rain and mountain snow will continue over the West as a series of Pacific disturbances will move inland before a more significant storm approaches northern California and the Pacific Northwest on Sunday. Several inches of rain are likely with 3 to 5 inches along and near the West coast from north of San Francisco along the Oregon and Washington coasts. While snow levels will start out quite high, they will drop on Monday across the Cascades, Sierras and the mountains of central Idaho and northwest Montana, where snow will be locally heavy. A large area of cold high pressure north of New England will set the stage for a prolonged period of cold and snow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday across interior New York and much of New England, especially central New England. A series of relatively weak upper level disturbances, combined with easterly flow off the Atlantic Ocean will produce periods of snow that will possibly add up to over a foot of snow from eastern New York across central New England, including Boston. A narrow area of freezing rain, sleet and snow will be located at the southern edge of this system affecting portions of the Midwest, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York City and Long Island. In between the storminess in the West and the colder conditions across the East, an upper ridge will bring warm temperatures to the Southwest, Rockies and Southern Plains, where afternoon temperatures will be in the 60's, 70's and 80's, well above normal for mid winter.
