Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 315 AM EDT Wed May 13 2015 Valid 12Z Wed May 13 2015 - 12Z Fri May 15 2015 ***A break in the early season warmth for the eastern U.S.*** ***Heavy rain and storms for the Plains states*** ***Unsettled weather over parts of the western U.S.*** After multiple days of unseasonably warm and humid weather for much of the eastern U.S., a cold front has finally reached the East Coast. A welcomed change to cooler and less humid conditions is here through the end of the work week from the Midwest to the Carolinas and points north. Afternoon highs will be near normal with readings in the 60s and 70s, and comfortable overnight lows. The exception to this will be near the Gulf Coast and for Florida, where the front is expected to stall out, and it will still remain warm and humid for these areas. It's a different story for Texas and the central Plains. Widespread moderate to heavy rain is expected over the next couple of days for Texas as deep moisture from the Gulf of Mexico continues to interact with a stalled out frontal boundary that will return northward as a warm front. Multiple thunderstorm complexes are likely, and these could easily bring a couple inches of rain and some severe weather as well. For the western states, a pronounced upper-level trough over the West Coast will remain over the region through Thursday before slowly moving over the Intermountain West by Friday. Multiple shortwaves pivoting around this trough will provide enough lift for scattered to numerous showers for California and the Pacific Northwest for the end of the week. The same holds true for the Intermountain Region and northern Rockies where a few thunderstorms are possible, with snow at the highest elevations. Below normal temperatures are also likely for much of the western U.S. Hamrick Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
