Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 539 PM EDT Mon May 25 2015 Valid 00Z Tue May 26 2015 - 00Z Thu May 28 2015 ***Stormy weather and flooding over the southern Plains*** ***Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the western U.S.*** ***Warm and humid across much of the eastern U.S.*** Another round of bad weather is affecting central and eastern Texas, and eastern Oklahoma Monday evening as another surge of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico interacts with a potent shortwave aloft. Heavy rain will once again be a concern over areas that received excessive rainfall over the weekend, and this could lead to flash flooding issues. Severe thunderstorms are also expected from Texas to the Midwest states as this disturbance lifts to the northeast on Tuesday across the Mississippi River Valley and towards the Great Lakes region. An additional area of heavy rain and storms is likely across the Deep South. Over the western third of the U.S., mainly diurnally driven showers and thunderstorms can be expected each afternoon and evening from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Instability from a broad upper level trough over the region will promote the development of this convection, and the greatest coverage is expected from Utah to western Montana. The Bermuda high off the East Coast is allowing for building heat and humidity across much of the eastern U.S. this week. Sustained southerly flow and ridging aloft will result in widespread highs in the 80s to lower 90s along with dewpoints well into the 60s to around 70 degrees, which is more typical of late June. Rain chances return by Tuesday and Wednesday as the disturbance currently to the west begins affecting the region. However, the strength and severity will be significantly less than what is happening over the Plains given the strong ridge off the coast.
