Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 334 PM EDT Sat Jul 18 2015 Valid 00Z Sun Jul 19 2015 - 00Z Tue Jul 21 2015 ...Severe thunderstorms possible across portions of the central plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio River valley... ...Above average temperatures expected for much of the eastern U.S... A cold front will move eastward across the Upper Great Lakes, Midwest, and central plains tonight as a surface low moves through Ontario. As the cold front moves into a very warm, moist, and unstable air mass, showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop along and ahead of the front. The front will be nearly stationary farther southwest, across the central plains and into the Colorado Rockies. Areas of showers and thunderstorms are expected in the vicinity of the front here as well. Sufficient vertical wind shear will exist for some thunderstorms to become severe -- and the Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a slight to enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms through tonight for much of the central plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio River valley. On Sunday the cold front will move east into the Lower Great Lakes while continuing to hang back across the Ohio valley as the forward motion of the front over that area slows. Ahead of the cold front, showers and thunderstorms will affect areas from the Lower Great Lakes to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Sunday, while also continuing across the Ohio valley and into the central plains along the front. A second, fast-moving cold front will dive southward into the northern plains late Sunday afternoon and will move into the Midwest by Monday morning. Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible in association with this front. Moisture flowing northward into the southwestern U.S. east of Tropical Storm Dolores will result in scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this evening and again on Sunday, particularly focused in areas of terrain. Shower and thunderstorms activity may become more widespread across coastal southern California Sunday night into Monday morning as the remnants of Dolores draw closer. Temperatures will be above average across much of the eastern U.S. on Sunday and Monday as high pressure at the mid and upper-levels causes the air to sink and warm. Afternoon high temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees above average across much of the eastern third of the country on Sunday and Monday.
