Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 351 AM EDT Thu Jul 30 2015 Valid 12Z Thu Jul 30 2015 - 12Z Sat Aug 01 2015 ...Showers and thunderstorms expected today for the East Coast... ...Flash flooding possible for portions of the southwestern U.S... ...Above average temperatures expected for the Pacific Northwest... A cold front will sweep across the eastern U.S. today, bringing showers and thunderstorms to areas from the Northeast to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Showers and thunderstorms will move off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean by early Friday morning. The surface frontal boundary will move more slowly across the southeastern states, keeping showers and thunderstorms a possibility across portions of that region into Saturday. By Saturday, the most widespread shower and thunderstorms activity will be across the Gulf Coast and across the Florida Peninsula. The western end of the same frontal boundary moving across the East will be nearly stationary across the southern plains over the next couple days. This will keep the possibility of showers and thunderstorms in place across portions of the southern plains through the next couple days. The most widespread shower and thunderstorms activity is expected across portions of Arizona and New Mexico, generally in areas of higher terrain. Convection will be enhanced due to a combination of a lingering surface frontal boundary, terrain influences, and deep tropical moisture flowing into the region. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding will be a possibility. Additional more scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible across much of the southwestern U.S through Saturday. High pressure at the mid and upper-levels of the atmosphere will keep dry conditions and above average temperatures in place across the Pacific Northwest. Afternoon high temperatures will be as much as 10 to 15 degrees above average at many locations, with temperatures surpassing 100 degrees in some areas.
