Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 458 PM EDT Sat Aug 22 2015 Valid 00Z Sun Aug 23 2015 - 00Z Tue Aug 25 2015 ---Strong low pressure system over the Upper Midwest--- ---Cooler weather arriving for the north-central states--- ---Scattered showers and storms for the southern U.S.--- A developing low pressure system over North Dakota and Minnesota on Saturday afternoon will be one of the main weather makers across the U.S. over the next couple of days. A strong cold front will trail behind this low, and numerous showers and storms are expected ahead of the front from the central High Plains to the Upper Midwest Saturday night. Severe storms are also likely as moisture and wind shear create a favorable environment. Areas of heavy rainfall are also possible where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same areas. Much cooler weather will settle in behind the front across much of the north-central U.S. for Sunday, making it feel more like fall. The southern portion of a front that recently cleared the East Coast is slowly dissipating across the Deep South this weekend. As a result, showers and storms are expected each day across this region in the warm and humid airmass. Scattered storms are also expected over the southern Rockies and Four-Corners region.
