Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 414 AM EDT Wed Sep 30 2015 Valid 12Z Wed Sep 30 2015 - 12Z Fri Oct 02 2015 ...Widespread heavy rains and flash flooding possible across parts of the East Coast... The wet pattern for the East Coast has already begun on Tuesday as moderate to heavy rains moved across the Mid-Atlantic to New England. These rains still continue into the early morning hours of Wednesday and already has a history of producing flash flooding. The heaviest axis of rainfall currently moving through the Northeast will maintain a northward track toward New England through Wednesday along the front. Expect rain to taper off behind this bulk of precipitation throughout the day today and into tonight as the cold front exits off the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic coast. Meanwhile, an upper level low axis centered along the Mississippi Valley will continue bringing copious amounts of moisture across the Southeast and southern/central Appalachians. As the cold front pushes south across the Southeast, showers and thunderstorms will develop from the Deep South through the Carolinas on Wednesday. By Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, the cold front will move offshore from the Carolinas. However, the front will slowly trek eastward on Thursday and even stall by Friday. This front, along with ample moisture, will trigger more showers and thunderstorms from the Southeast, across the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. Several inches of rain can be expected through Friday and beyond which will bring concerns of flash flooding. See the WPC excessive rainfall outlooks for more details. On Thursday, a closed low off the California coast will swing eastward across the Great Basin. This will cause convection to fire off from the central Great Basin and into the Rockies during the afternoon and evening on Thursday. As the low progresses eastward, convection will spread through the northern and central Plains by Friday morning. Fanning Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
