Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 426 PM EDT Sun Oct 18 2015 Valid 00Z Mon Oct 19 2015 - 00Z Wed Oct 21 2015 ***Cold and dry for much of the eastern U.S.*** ***Unsettled weather for parts of the western U.S.*** A relatively cold airmass remains in place across much of the northern and eastern U.S. This is indeed the coldest air of the season for many locations, and widespread freeze warnings are in effect Sunday night from North Carolina to southern New England, and also for the central and southern Appalachians. Frost advisories are in effect from northern Mississippi to eastern North Carolina. By Monday, a slow rebound in temperatures should commence as the surface high slowly moves off the East Coast and milder winds bring warmer weather by Tuesday. Some scattered showers will be possible at times over the Northeast U.S. through Sunday night, with even a few snow showers possible at the highest elevations. For the western U.S., another deep trough and upper level low are forecast to affect the weather across much of the western U.S. for the beginning of the work week. Numerous showers and a few thunderstorms are likely, with the greatest coverage during the afternoon and evening hours. The heaviest activity over the next two days is likely from the mountains of northern Arizona to the northern Rockies, where 1 to 2 inches of rainfall will be possible with isolated higher amounts, which could lead to flash flooding issues.
