Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 353 AM EDT Thu Oct 22 2015 Valid 12Z Thu Oct 22 2015 - 12Z Sat Oct 24 2015 ...Flash flooding possible across portions of the southern plains through the next couple days... An upper-level trough will move across the Four Corners region today while a surface low and warm front drift northward across the central plains. A plume of moist and unstable air will continue to be pulled northward from the Gulf of Mexico across the southern and central plains, resulting in widespread showers and thunderstorms today, and continuing into Friday. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 7 inches, with locally higher amounts, are forecast across portions of the southern plains over the next couple days. These heavy rainfall amounts will lead to a threat of flash flooding for some areas through Friday. Farther west, scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible from the Four Corners region into the central Rockies. Temperatures will be cold enough in the higher elevations of the Colorado Rockies for precipitation to fall in the form of snow, where 2 to 8 inches is possible. Rain showers will expand across the northern plains as well by late today, north of the warm front. Friday into Friday night, these showers will shift east into the Midwest as the surface low pressure system moves into the Upper Midwest. Additionally, showers and thunderstorms will continue on Friday from the Mid-Mississippi valley to the southern plains. Meanwhile, a cold front will move across the northeastern U.S. today, with showers possible along and ahead of the front. The front will move offshore tonight, generally bringing an end to the precipitation, although a mix of rain and snow showers may linger into Friday morning across portions of northern New England.
