Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 135 AM EST Mon Dec 14 2015 Valid 12Z Mon Dec 14 2015 - 12Z Wed Dec 16 2015 ...Rain moving across the Midwest and Great Lakes to the mid Atlantic States with wintry precipitation in Maine... ...Heavy snow expected in the northern to central Rockies across the central/northern Plains... ...Warm conditions continue from the mid Atlantic across the southeast.. An area of low pressure over is forecast to lift towards the Great Lakes by Monday afternoon, then crossing northern New England Tuesday before moving offshore Tuesday night. Areas of rain will occur along the track of the low, with showers and storms occurring ahead of the trailing cold front across the mid Atlantic, New York, and southern New England. North of the low track, mixed snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected for the western upper peninsula of MI and northern Maine. For the western U.S., another low pressure system and cold front will be producing widespread snow for the Intermountain West and Rocky Mountains, and showers for the Desert Southwest. Numerous winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect, especially for the higher elevations. Snow will develop in the central to northern high plains Monday night and spread northeast on Tuesday towards the northern Plains. Another day of unusual warmth is expected for the East Coast on Monday before the cold front clears the coast by early Tuesday. Sustained southerly flow combined with plenty of warm air aloft will allow for temperatures to reach well into the 60s in the mid Atlantic Monday and 70s in the southeast for daytime highs. Even behind the front, temperatures are still expected to be above normal for mid-week. Tuesday's high temperatures will still be in the 70s in the southeast to the lower Mississippi Valley.
