Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 241 AM EST Mon Jan 04 2016 Valid 12Z Mon Jan 04 2016 - 12Z Wed Jan 06 2016 ...Rain/Freezing rain possible for parts of the Pacific Northwest... ...Heavy rain possible for parts of Northern and Southern California... ...Heavy snow possible for the Sierras... Multiple storms will move into the West Coast that will aid in eroding an upper-level ridge centered over the Rockies. Each system will bring moisture from the Pacific into the West Coast producing rain along the coast from Washington State to Southern California on Monday morning. In addition, rain and higher elevation snow will develop over interior parts of the Pacific Northwest and parts of the Northern Intermountain Region through Tuesday evening. Rain/Freezing rain over the Columbia River Gorge will come to an end by Tuesday as the precipitation changes over to all rain. As the moisture and energy move inland, rain and higher elevation snow will develop over the Sierras and move into the Southwest/Great Basin by Monday evening. On Tuesday, the rain and higher elevation snow will move into parts of the Southern/Central Rockies and parts of the Great Basin as well. Meanwhile, a front over the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic will move southeastward into the Carolinas/Southern Ohio Valley and dissipate overnight Monday. The energy associated with the boundary will aid in producing lake effect/lake enhanced snow downwind from the Great Lakes through Monday night when upper-level ridging moves into the Great Lakes. Elsewhere, old front near Southern Florida slowly moves southeastward away from Florida. Rain associated with the boundary will likewise slowly end over Southern Florida on Monday afternoon. By Tuesday, easterly flow from the Atlantic will return to the East Coast of Florida producing scattered rain over the area through Tuesday evening. Additionally as energy from the Pacific moves over the Rockies, moisture from the Western Gulf of Mexico will begin to move northward over the Southern Plains aiding in the development of rain over parts of the Southern High Plains by Tuesday evening.
