Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 358 PM EST Thu Jan 07 2016 Valid 00Z Fri Jan 08 2016 - 00Z Sun Jan 10 2016 ...Heavy snow possible for parts of the Mogollon Rim and Central/Southern Rockies... ...Snow for parts of the Central Plains, Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes... Arctic air will sag southward from southern Canada into the Northern and Central Plains over the next couple of days. A low pressure system will move through the Southwest/Southern Rockies and lift north and east through the weekend reaching the Ohio Valley and Southeast by Saturday evening. Rain and higher elevation snow will develop from California eastward to Central/Southern Rockies that will end over California and parts of the Great Basin/Southwest by Friday evening. Additionally, snow will develop over parts of the Northern Rockies/Northern High Plains through Friday. With arctic air spilling in behind the passing frontal system, a widespread area of snow will develop across the Upper Mississippi Valley and Upper Great Lakes. A thin strip of freezing rain will be possible from Nebraska to Wisconsin and central Michigan. Ice accumulations, if any, will likely be less than 0.10 inch. A plume of moisture will flow from the Gulf of Mexico into the Southeast/Mid-Atlantic Coast by Friday evening. Rain and embedded thunderstorms are expected from the Southern/Central Plains to the Ohio/Tennessee Valley as the front progresses to the East. Rain is also expected for the West coast as a series of front approach the Pacific Northwest. The higher elevations of the Sierras will get snow over the next couple of days.
