Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 327 PM EST Sun Jan 10 2016 Valid 00Z Mon Jan 11 2016 - 00Z Wed Jan 13 2016 ...Heavy rain and strong winds for New England through tonight... ...Heavy lake effect snow expected downwind of the Great Lakes... ...Frigid temperatures to affect the northern tier states... A deepening surface low tracking northward into Quebec tonight will bring noteworthy changes in the weather over the northeastern quadrant of the nation. Widespread moderate to heavy rain is expected over New England and upstate New York Sunday evening and overnight before much colder temperatures arrive on Monday. Strong and gusty winds are also expected with a tight pressure gradient in place over the region. With the departure of the East Coast storm system, sustained cold air advection over the relatively warmer waters of the Great Lakes is expected to result in a significant lake effect snow event over parts of Michigan, and downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Some locations may receive in excess of a foot of snow where the heaviest snow bands set up. On Tuesday, a secondary surge of arctic air is expected behind a strong Alberta clipper system that is forecast to track across the Great Lakes, along with additional accumulating snow. It will remain bitterly cold over much of the north-central U.S. for the beginning of the week. Northwest flow aloft will keep a steady intrusion of arctic air behind multiple cold fronts, with subzero temperatures likely from the Dakotas to Wisconsin for overnight lows. D.
