Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 356 AM EST Sat Jan 23 2016 Valid 12Z Sat Jan 23 2016 - 12Z Mon Jan 25 2016 ...Heavy snow from parts of the Mid-Atlantic to the Northeast... ...Rain possible over parts of the southern Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast... A vast portion of the eastern U.S. continues to be impacted by a strong winter storm. As the system tracks up the East Coast, precipitation is spreading northward into Pennsylvania and New Jersey and as far west as eastern Kentucky/Ohio. The heaviest snow is falling across Maryland and Delaware, but with shift toward southern New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts by this afternoon/evening. Many locations across Maryland and Washington D.C. have snow accumulations already nearing 1 foot, with more expected today(Saturday). An additional 8 to 15 inches is forecast along the D.C. to Long Island corridor. Strong coastal winds are causing to the snow to blow and drift in this vicinity- travel has been negatively impacted. Numerous Winter Storm Warnings and a handful of Blizzard Warnings remain in effect from the Southeast to the Northeast. The widespread snow is forecast to taper off by Sunday morning as the low center moves further offshore into the North Atlantic. A deep upper-level trough will trek through West, crossing the Northern Rockies and Great Basin by Sunday morning. Rain will spread across the Pacific Northwest Coast to the Central California Coast- with a mix of rain and snow at higher elevations inland through Sunday. As the system moves inland, snow will return to the Northern Intermountain Region and the Northern Rockies this morning through Sunday. Additionally, snow will develop over the Great Basin into parts of the Central Rockies into Sunday as a surface low and developing cold front enters the Southern/Central Plains.
