Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 258 AM EST Sun Feb 21 2016 Valid 12Z Sun Feb 21 2016 - 12Z Tue Feb 23 2016 ...Rain and mountain snow for the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies... ...Showers and thunderstorms from Texas to the Southeast Coast... A dissipating cold front will be working its way inland over the northwestern U.S. on Sunday. It will have enough moisture to produce rain and higher elevation snow over parts of the Pacific Northwest on Sunday afternoon into evening. By Monday morning, snow showers are likely over the northern Rockies as the moisture moves eastward. Onshore flow in the wake of the front should be enough to produce some coastal rain and higher elevation snow over the Northwest Coast. Unsettled weather is expected over the southern tier states through Tuesday as a cold front slowly moves southward and then stalls near the Gulf Coast. The moisture convergence in the vicinity of this boundary will provide enough lift for scattered showers and storms to develop on Sunday and into Monday. By Tuesday morning, a more concentrated area of rain and embedded thunderstorms is likely over parts of the southern Plains and the Deep South as a surface low develops over Texas and moves eastward. Across the eastern U.S., cooler weather will be arriving by Sunday afternoon as a cold front sinks southeastward actoss the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic region. Periods of rain are expected on Sunday as the wave of low pressure tracks eastward. It will dry out for Monday across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast before moisture returns by mid-week.
