Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 206 PM EST Sun Feb 28 2016 Valid 00Z Mon Feb 29 2016 - 00Z Wed Mar 02 2016 ...Snow expected this evening and tonight for portions of the northern Great Lakes and northern Maine... ...Mountain snow and valley rain expected from the Pacific Northwest to portions of the Rockies... A low pressure system will move across the Great Lakes this evening/tonight, and toward Maine on Monday. This system will bring snow to portions of the northern Great Lakes this evening, with rain across the southern Great Lakes and portions of the Ohio valley. A stationary frontal boundary east of the surface low will also bring snow to portions of northern Maine tonight -- which will change to a wintry mix by Monday morning. Farther south along the cold front, rain showers will be possible for much of New England, the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic, and into the Southeast. Rain may mix with snow at the higher elevations of the Appalachians. On Monday, another low pressure system associated with an Arctic cold front will spread another round of snow into the Great Lakes. Behind this cold front, colder temperatures will spread into the Midwest and Great Lakes by Tuesday, bringing an end to the above average temperatures which will persist through Monday for many areas. A Pacific cold front will bring mountain snow and valley rain to portions of the Pacific Northwest, northern Intermountain West, and Rockies tonight into Monday. By Monday afternoon, this front will begin to emerge from the Rockies into the High Plains, skirting south of the Arctic front. Moisture return ahead of the system will result in scattered showers and thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening across portions of the southern/central plains and Mississippi valley. Farther north, in the colder air north of the Arctic front, scattered areas of snow will be possible across the northern plains. On Tuesday, the low pressure system will develop further as it moves into the mid-Mississippi valley and the Ohio valley. Rain and thunderstorms are likely on Tuesday across much of the lower and mid Mississippi valley, Ohio valley, Tennessee valley, and the Southeast. On the northern side of the system, snow is expected from across the Great Lakes and portions of the Northeast. Additionally, by late Monday into Tuesday, another Pacific low pressure system will spread rain and mountain snow into the Northwest, and northern portions of the Intermountain West.
