Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 251 AM EST Sat Mar 12 2016 Valid 12Z Sat Mar 12 2016 - 12Z Mon Mar 14 2016 ...Additional heavy rain likely from Texas to Mississippi... ...More rain and mountain snow for the West Coast and Intermountain West... ...Severe thunderstorms possible on Sunday for the lower Mississippi Valley... Areas of moderate to heavy rainfall are in the forecast across the south-central U.S. through the weekend, although not as heavy or widespread as what was observed over the past few days. The anomalous upper low that has been over Mexico is now slowly lifting northward across Texas and weakening. Thunderstorm complexes moving inland from the Gulf of Mexico will bring multiple rounds of heavy rain that will only exacerbate ongoing flooding issues, and some areas may get an inch or more of rain through by Sunday afternoon. A few severe thunderstorms will also be possible over this region. Our QPF discussions will have additional details concerning the heavy rainfall forecast. Across the western U.S., a series of frontal systems progressing eastward will bring multiple periods of rain and mountain snow through the weekend. The heaviest snow is likely for the Cascades and the Sierra Nevada ranges, where 1 to 3 feet of snow is expected. Windy conditions are expected for coastal areas with wind gusts exceeding 50 mph at times, and wind advisories and high wind watches are in effect. Mild weather is expected to continue for the eastern U.S. with highs in the 60s and 70s expected this weekend, which is well above seasonal averages. D.
