Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 158 AM EST Sun Mar 13 2016 Valid 12Z Sun Mar 13 2016 - 12Z Tue Mar 15 2016 ...Additional rain likely from Texas to Mississippi... ...Rain and mountain snow for the West Coast and Intermountain West... ...Severe thunderstorms likely on Sunday for the lower Mississippi Valley... After days of heavy rainfall and flooding across Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley, the pattern will be changing as the deep moisture feed from the Gulf of Mexico weakens. River levels will remain quite high across this region as all of the rain water slowly drains away. Although there will be less heavy rain in the forecast, a threat of severe weather will exist from eastern Oklahoma to northern Mississippi on Sunday as a potent disturbance moves in from the western High Plains. The Storm Prediction Center has additional details concerning the severe potential. Across the western U.S., a series of frontal systems progressing eastward will bring multiple periods of rain and mountain snow through Monday. The heaviest snow is likely for the Cascades and the Sierra Nevada ranges, where 1 to 3 feet of snow is expected. Windy conditions are expected for coastal areas with wind gusts exceeding 50 mph at times, and wind advisories and high wind watches are in effect. Over the eastern U.S., periods of rain with a few thunderstorms are likely across the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, and Mid-Atlantic region on Sunday as moisture returns to the region from the south. Cool and dry conditions are expected to continue for New England through Monday morning before rain and mountain snow returns by Monday night. Mild weather is expected to continue from the Mid-Atlantic to the Southeast with highs in the 60s and 70s expected through Monday, which is above seasonal averages. D.
