Showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop this weekend, from the Gulf coast northward to the Mid-Atlantic states, as a warm front lifts through the Southeast and a cold front pushes through the Appalachians into the Southeast/Mid-Atlantic region. Periods of heavy rain will be possible, especially along the Appalachian range. A surface low pressure will develop along the front this afternoon across the Southeast and is expected to be off the Mid-Atlantic coast by Sunday morning. Rain will spread into the Mid-Atlantic today, possibly transitioning into a mix of rain and snow as the cold air filters in by midday. Areas west of the I-95 corridor will likely be all snow by Sunday morning. Snow is also forecast to spread into much of the Northeast on Sunday, with heavy snow possible for some areas. Accumulations of 1 to 4 inches will be common from the central Appalachians to southern Maine. Higher snow amounts will be possible along the Shenandoah region - Winter Weather Advisories are in effect along the West Virginia and Virginia border. Rain will spread across the northwest states as a Pacific low pressure system approaches the coast. Snow levels will be relatively high through Sunday, with snow expected only at the highest elevations of the Cascades and the Sierras, as well as the northern Intermountain region. A 3-day snow total of 4 to 8 inches of snow is forecast for the Cascades and Sierras, with possibly a foot for the Sawtooth range in Idaho. Coastal areas from the Olympic peninsula to northern California could potentially have 2 to 5 inches of rain by early Monday morning.
