Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 227 AM EDT Fri Apr 01 2016 Valid 12Z Fri Apr 01 2016 - 12Z Sun Apr 03 2016 ...Severe thunderstorms and flash flooding possible for portions of the Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic... ...Locally heavy rain expected today for the Northeast... ...Snow and cooler temperatures expected from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast Saturday and Sunday... A cold front moving across the eastern U.S. today will bring areas of rain and thunderstorms to portions of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Gulf Coast states. Some thunderstorms may be severe across portions of the Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic states -- where the Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. Additionally, heavy rain may produce flash flooding in some areas of the Southeast. Farther north, locally heavy rain will also be possible for portions of the Northeast. The cold front will move away from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic by Saturday, but will linger across the Southeast, with another day of showers and thunderstorms possible for portions of that region. A fast-moving low pressure system will move from Canada into the Upper Midwest late today, bringing rain and snow to portions of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes through Saturday morning. On Sunday, the system will spread another round of precipitation into the Northeast, which will fall as a mix of rain and snow initially, but may transition more to scattered snow showers by early Sunday morning as colder air moves into the region. The western U.S. will remain mostly dry through the short range forecast period as high pressure remains in place across the region. A weak upper-level disturbance may bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to portions of the interior Northwest on Saturday, however.
