Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 329 AM EDT Thu May 05 2016 Valid 12Z Thu May 05 2016 - 12Z Sat May 07 2016 ...Heavy rain possible for portions of the central Appalachians and southern Mid-Atlantic/Southeast... ...Well above average temperatures expected from the northern Rockies to the Upper Midwest... A low pressure system will move across the Mid-Atlantic states today, bringing rain and thunderstorms to much of the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and central Appalachians. Locally heavy rain is possible, with some areas forecast to receive 1 to 2 inches through Friday morning. Another low pressure system farther offshore will bring rain to coastal portions of New England today. Friday and Saturday are expected to be cool with areas of rain persisting across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as the area of low pressure crossing the Mid-Atlantic today stalls offshore before moving westward back toward the coast. Well above average temperatures will expand eastward from the northern Rockies and northern plains into the Upper Midwest today as high pressure aloft holds strong overhead. Afternoon high temperatures in these areas are forecast to be 15 to 30 degrees above average -- with temperatures nearing 90 degrees for some. An upper-level low and cold front will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to much of the western U.S. today. This system will move east on Friday, with coverage of showers and thunderstorms increasing across the central/northern Rockies. Also on Friday, a cold front will move south from Canada into the northern plains and Upper Midwest, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms. By Saturday, this system will move into the Great Lakes, mid-Mississippi valley, and the central plains, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to those areas.
