Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 427 PM EDT Sat May 21 2016 Valid 00Z Sun May 22 2016 - 00Z Tue May 24 2016 ...A wet and cool weekend will continue for much of the Western U.S. as well as portions of the Mid-Atlantic states... ...Heavy rains and severe storms will be possible ahead of a frontal boundary slowly edging out into the Great Plains... Widespread shower activity will continue beneath a broad upper trough carving out over the Western U.S. this weekend and into early next week...especially during the late afternoon and early evening hours. In addition...the expansive upper trough should keep daytime temperatures well below normal from the West Coast to the Rockies...which could lead to snow in some of the higher elevations. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible ahead of a frontal boundary slowly edging eastward out into the Great Plains states Sunday and Monday. An abundance of Gulf moisture getting pulled northward ahead of the broad upper trough in the West should fuel heavy rains within developing storms...and storms will have the potential to turn severe from Texas to Montana and North Dakota. Please refer to the Storm Prediction Center for the latest information on severe weather. In the East...an upper low closing off over the Mid-Atlantic region should keep conditions wet and cool through the weekend. The heaviest rain should stay offshore with a pair of surface lows lifting up the Atlantic coast...but the slow progression of the closed low will allow showers to stay in the forecast for portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states trough Monday.
