Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 400 PM EDT Sun Jun 19 2016 Valid 00Z Mon Jun 20 2016 - 00Z Wed Jun 22 2016 ...A warming trend expected for the eastern U.S. as excessive heat begins to abate in the Desert Southwest on Tuesday... ...A cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms from the northern Plains into the Northeast... Under a strong high pressure cell aloft, much of the Desert Southwest will continue to be under the influence of excessive heat today and into Monday. In addition to the heat will also be the increasing danger of fire. By Tuesday, the heat should begin to abate somewhat area-wide. In contrast, the eastern U.S. has been enjoying cool mornings and warm afternoons under abundant sunshine. The strong June solar radiation will progressively warm up the cool airmass as a cold front from the northern Plains is forecast to advance steadily eastward during the next couple of days. High temperatures will rise above normal Monday and Tuesday over the Northeast before showers and some thunderstorms associated with the front arrive on Tuesday. Over the northern Plains, the aforementioned cold front is expected to trigger showers and thunderstorms across the region this evening and into the Great Lakes on Monday. The trailing portion of the front is forecast to become stationary in the central Plains. This will trigger more showers and thunderstorms across the same general area in Nebraska Monday into Tuesday, where heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding. Cool air behind the front will continue to infiltrate the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies and through the northern Plains. Meanwhile, a weakening cold front is expected to move through Florida, pushing much of the showers and thunderstorms into the Gulf of Mexico and into the Atlantic. But some residual showers and thunderstorms are expected to linger across the western Gulf Coast region. Kong Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
