Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 305 AM EDT Fri Jun 24 2016 Valid 12Z Fri Jun 24 2016 - 12Z Sun Jun 26 2016 ...Severe thunderstorms possible for portions of the northern plains and the Southeast/southern Mid-Atlantic... ...Above average temperatures expected for much of the central U.S... A couple areas of low pressure will move along a cold front across the southern Mid-Atlantic region today, bringing areas of showers and thunderstorms from the southern Mid-Atlantic into the Southeast. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined portions of these areas for a slight risk of severe thunderstorms today and tonight. Please refer to products issued by SPC for further details on the severe weather threat. The same frontal boundary extends westward, and will bring showers and thunderstorms from the Tennessee valley to the central and northern plains today. An area of low pressure will develop today across the northern High Plains as an upper-level disturbance crosses the northern Rockies. This disturbance, along with the surface low pressure system, will provide the necessary ingredients for the potential for severe thunderstorms today and tonight across portions of the northern plains as well. On Saturday the northern plains low pressure system will move north into Canada as it begins to rapidly deepen. The system will bring showers and thunderstorms on Saturday to areas from the Midwest and upper Great Lakes to the central/southern plains and southern Rockies. The system will spread showers and thunderstorms east into the lower Great Lakes and portions of the Ohio valley by Sunday. Additionally, scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue into the weekend across the Southeast, as the cold front lingers across the region. Temperatures are expected to be above average today across much of the central U.S., with afternoon high temperatures forecast to be 10 to 15 degrees above average, particularly across portions of the central and northern plains. The cold front responsible for the showers and storms today will usher a cooler and drier air mass into portions of the central and northern plains for Saturday.
