Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 354 PM EDT Sun Jul 03 2016 Valid 00Z Mon Jul 04 2016 - 00Z Wed Jul 06 2016 ...The threat for flash flooding and severe weather will shift from the Middle Mississippi Valley eastward into the Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians... ...Warm and muggy conditions will persist from the southern Plains to the Carolinas... ...Cooling trend expected from the Northwest to the northern Rockies early this week... Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are continuing to fire up this afternoon along a low pressure system over the central U.S. As the surface low tracks eastward Monday and Tuesday, a cold front will move through the Middle Mississippi valley and a warm front will lift through the Tennessee/Ohio valleys. Warm, moist air streaming northward from the Gulf of Mexico will aid in future convective development. Strong to severe storms will be possible Monday from the Middle Mississippi valley to the central Mid-Atlantic region. Heavy rainfall is expected along this corridor which will elevate the threat for flash flooding, especially for West Virginia and extreme western Maryland. The warm front will continue to track northward up the Eastern Seaboard through midweek. Areas south of this system - Deep South and Southeast - will have persistent warm and muggy conditions. Daytime heating will likely generate pop-up showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours near the Gulf Coast and Florida. A cooling trend is in store from the Northwest to the northern Rockies early this week as a series of cold fronts gradually press inland. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for areas ahead of the boundaries... especially as they push out into the northern Plains. Strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible for portions of the northern High Plains and Upper Midwest on Tuesday. Any heavy rainfall totals should be isolated. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also be possible during the afternoon and evening hours across the Desert Southwest and Four Corners regions.
