The oppressive airmass over the southern states will persist into the weekend. A vast area will have afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid 90s, with only a slight relief with 70s for overnight lows. Some triple digit temperatures are possible across parts of Texas, as well as the lower elevations of the Desert Southwest. Heat advisory are in effect across portions of the lower Mississippi valley, central Georgia and coastal Carolinas. A series of cold fronts will pass through the Northwest states and move across the High Plains, resulting in well below normal temperatures for early July. Showers and thunderstorms may turn severe and produce heavy rain as they pass through the Plains. Localized flash flooding will be possible. Some of the higher elevations from Washington state to Montana could even get snow! Showers and thunderstorms are also expected from the Upper Midwest to the Ohio Valley, and also across the Appalachians and the Northeast U.S. by tonight as a low pressure system tracks eastward. Areas of heavy rain with the thunderstorm activity may increase the risk for flash flooding, especially from the middle Mississippi valley to eastern Tennessee valley.
