Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 359 AM EDT Thu Jul 14 2016 Valid 12Z Thu Jul 14 2016 - 12Z Sat Jul 16 2016 ...Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall possible across portions of the Central Plains/Middle Mississippi valley today... ...Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall possible across portions the Northeast... ...Below average temperatures expected from the northern Rockies to the northern plains... Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop along and ahead of a cold front passing through the Great Lakes, Ohio valley and Middle Mississippi valley. Portions of the central Plains and Middle Mississippi valley could have severe weather this afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding from southern Kansas, northern Oklahoma, southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas where with front will be nearly stationary. A secondary cold front will follow its heel and move through the Great Lakes region tonight and into Friday. Cooler air will spill into the northern Plains and down the Rockies before spreading into the central Plains, Middle Mississippi valley and Great Lakes by this weekend. Forecast highs will average 10+ degrees cooler than those typical for mid-July. A moist and unsettled airmass over much of the Gulf states and the Southeast will aid in the development of showers and thunderstorms through the end of the week and into the weekend. Much of the West will have dry conditions over the next several days. Onshore flow over the Pacific Northwest will bring light shower activity, but will result in minimal precipitation.
