A stationary frontal boundary along with a series of weak upper-level disturbances will result in scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms across the central U.S. into tonight. Storms may become severe across portions of the southern and central High Plains, and heavy rain is also possible. Please refer to products issued by the Storm Prediction Center for further details on the severe weather threat. On Saturday the focus will shift north as a surface low develops along the front in response to an incoming upper disturbance crossing the northern Rockies. Severe thunderstorms heavy rain will be possible on Saturday across much of the northern and central plains as well as into portions of the Upper Midwest. By Sunday this low pressure system will move east, spreading showers and thunderstorms into the Upper Great Lakes. Farther east, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this evening from the Ohio valley to the Southeast and Gulf Coast ahead in a warm and moist air mass ahead of a cold front. This cold front will move into the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday, and showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous ahead of the front across the Carolinas and southern Virginia. Heavy rainfall is possible across these areas. High pressure at the mid and upper-levels of the atmosphere will promote continued above average temperatures from the southern Rockies to the southern High Plains on Saturday and Sunday.
