Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 229 AM EDT Sun Jul 24 2016 Valid 12Z Sun Jul 24 2016 - 12Z Tue Jul 26 2016 ...Hot conditions to continue for much of the central and eastern U.S... ...Heavy rainfall possible from the central plains to the Ohio valley... High pressure at the mid and upper levels of the of the atmosphere will persist across the southern portion of the country today, keeping above average temperatures in place from the southwestern U.S. to the central and southern plains to the East Coast. Heat advisories and excessive heat warnings have been issued for many areas from the central/southern plains to the Ohio valley and portions of the East Coast, where temperatures are expected to rise well into the 90s to even above 100 across the southern plains. Heat indices across these areas will be oppressive, in the 100 to 115 degree range. On Monday, temperatures in the plains will cool to near normal as the ridge of high pressure weakens somewhat. The hot temperatures will persist into Monday and Tuesday, however. A frontal system will bring areas of showers and thunderstorms from portions of the Midwest and central plains to the Ohio valley and lower Great Lakes today. Some storms may produce heavy rainfall, particularly for areas from the central plains to the Ohio valley. On Monday this system will spread scattered showers and thunderstorms into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Farther south, the hot and humid air mass will be supportive of isolated to scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms from portions of the Southeast to the lower Mississippi valley and the Southeast today and Monday. Storms could become a bit more numerous along portions of the central Gulf Coast Monday night into Tuesday as deeper moisture spreads into the region from the Gulf of Mexico.
