Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 218 AM EDT Mon Jul 25 2016 Valid 12Z Mon Jul 25 2016 - 12Z Wed Jul 27 2016 ...Strong to severe thunderstorms possible across portions of the Mid-Atlantic states... ...Heat Advisories remain in effect through Monday for portions of the Eastern U.S... A cold front will produce showers and thunderstorms from the central/southern plains and Ohio valley to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast today, bringing the threat of locally heavy rainfall. Some thunderstorms could be severe across portions of the Mid-Atlantic region. Please refer to products issued by the Storm Prediction Center for further details on the severe weather threat. The cold front will move offshore of the Northeast by Tuesday, bringing an end to most precipitation over that area. The front will linger from the southern plains and mid-Mississippi valley to the Mid-Atlantic as a stationary front and eventually a warm front, keeping scattered showers and storms a possibility into Tuesday and Wednesday. Farther north, another cold front will move into the northern plains on Tuesday, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms from the northern plains to the Upper Midwest through Wednesday. Scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms will also continue through mid-week across the Gulf Coast and southeastern states. Storms will be most numerous along the western and central Gulf Coast where deeper moisture will be in place. The core of the upper-level ridge of high pressure that brought a heat wave to the central U.S. has now moved westward, centered over the Four Corners region. As a result, cooler temperatures are expected for much of the central U.S. today and Tuesday, with temperatures near or even slightly below normal across much of the central and southern plains. Farther east, however, a remnant piece of the high pressure ridge will persist across the southern Mid-Atlantic today, keeping hot temperatures in place along much of the East Coast. Heat advisories remain in effect through today for much of the Eastern Seaboard. Ryan Graphics available at www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/basicwx/basicwx_wbg.php
