Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 352 PM EDT Sun Jul 31 2016 Valid 00Z Mon Aug 01 2016 - 00Z Wed Aug 03 2016 ...Severe thunderstorms possible across portions of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest... ...Numerous showers and thunderstorms likely from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic... ...Heavy rain and flash flooding possible for the Northeast, Middle/Upper Mississippi valley and the Southwest... ...Hot weather from the Desert Southwest to central and southern Plains... Several rounds of rain and thunderstorm activity are expected from the Midwest to the East Coast through at least midweek. A slow moving frontal boundary will be in place, spanning from the northern Mid-Atlantic region westward to the Midwest and central Plains. A concentrated sector of heavier rainfall will likely set up over much of upstate New York and southern New England tonight and into Monday - where values may reach or exceed two inches. The coastal Carolinas may also be a favored spot for higher rainfall rates. Areas north of the frontal boundary, primarily the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region will have a cooler and less humid airmass. Much of the Desert Southwest and surrounding southern Plains will have persistent heat under the upper-level ridge. Monsoonal flow streaming into the Four-Corners region will help trigger convection across New Mexico and Arizona. Locally heavy rainfall is anticipated over the higher terrain; which may cause some flooding issues. Further north, a cold front pushing through the Northern Rockies will bring cooler air to the northwestern states over the next few days. Additionally, showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop along and ahead of the system as it continues to track across the Canadian Prairie and northern Plains.
