Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 350 AM EDT Mon Sep 05 2016 Valid 12Z Mon Sep 05 2016 - 12Z Wed Sep 07 2016 ...There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms from central Plains to the Upper Midwest... ...Heavy rain possible for portions of the Dakota and Upper Mississippi Valley... ...Temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees below average for the Northern Rockies/High Plains... Post-Tropical Cyclone Hermine is slowly tracking north-northeast offshore New England. Hermine will continue to weaken and is forecast to pass south of Nova Scotia by Friday afternoon. Check the National Hurricane Center for the most current information about Post-Tropical Cyclone Hermine (www.nhc.noaa.gov). Tropical moisture over the Gulf states combined with upper-level impulses will aid in producing showers and thunderstorms over the next few days. Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will develop along and ahead of a quasi-stationary front extending from the Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley roughly southwestward to the Great Basin. Precipitation is expected to be the greatest across the Northern Intermountain Region and eastward to the northern/central Plains and the Upper Mississippi Valley. Conditions favorable for severe thunderstorm development and heavy rainfall will be present over this region today and Tuesday. The area of showers and thunderstorms will expand into the Great Lakes region by midweek. The cooler air will overspread the northern Rockies and surrounding Plains - many locations will observe temperatures 10 to 20 degrees cooler than average. Also, monsoonal moisture and daytime heating will aid in producing showers and thunderstorms over parts of the Northern/Central Rockies. An additional influx of warm, moist air will increase the potential for heavy rainfall across the Southwest as Tropical Storm Newton tracks northward from the Eastern Pacific to the Baja Peninsula and the Gulf of California.
