Post-Tropical Cyclone Hermine, although slowly weakening, will continue to bring showers, strong winds, and coastal flooding to southern New England through midweek. Meanwhile, Hurricane Newton located in the East Pacific will track northward across Baja California Sur and the Gulf of California today - reaching New Mexico as a Post-Tropical Remnant Low by Thursday morning. The increased influx of tropical moisture into portions of the Southwest may increase the risk for flash flooding. At this point in time, the 3-day total for extreme southern Arizona is around 4 inches. Refer to products issued by the National Hurricane Center for the latest information on Post-Tropical Cyclone Hermine and Hurricane Newton forecast tracks. Refer to products issued by local NWS offices for forecast details specific to your area. A frontal boundary draped through central Plains to the Upper Midwest will make very little eastward progression today and Wednesday. Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will be possible along the front as a series of weak upper-level disturbances move across the region. The Storm Prediction Center has identified much of the central Plains and Upper Mississippi valley as having favorable conditions for strong to severe thunderstorm development. Heavy rainfall will also be possible, increasing the threat for flash flooding for this region. By late Wednesday the northern portion of the front will begin to move east, spreading showers and thunderstorms across the Great Lakes. Showers will increase across the Pacific Northwest as a cold front approaches. The area of showers will spread in the northern Rockies through the day today. Temperatures are expected to increase through mid-week across much of the eastern U.S. as a ridge of high pressure aloft builds from the lower Mississippi valley toward the Ohio valley and Mid-Atlantic. By Wednesday, high temperatures are forecast to be 10 to 15 degrees above average across much of the eastern third of the nation, with many areas of the Mid-Atlantic reaching well into the 90s once again.
