Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 352 PM EDT Sun Sep 18 2016 Valid 00Z Mon Sep 19 2016 - 00Z Wed Sep 21 2016 ...Heavy rain likely across portions of the Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast tonight into Monday... ...Showers and thunderstorms possible Monday and Tuesday across the Southwest... ...Warming temperatures expected across the central and eastern U.S.... Showers and thunderstorms are likely across the Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states tonight and into Monday ahead of a very slow moving cold front pushing into the region. Heavy rainfall will be possible, with as much as 1 to 3 inches of rain...with locally higher amounts...forecast across eastern portions of the Mid-Atlantic and into southern New England. WPC is highlighting a marginal to slight risk for flash flooding across these regions. Farther south, heavy rainfall may be on the increase across eastern North Carolina and especially the Outer Banks Monday into Tuesday as Tropical Depression Julia drifts slowly northward towards the coast. Out west, showers and thunderstorms should be on the increase across the Southwest starting Monday as tropical moisture associated with Tropical Storm Paine streams northward into the region. Localized heavy rainfall will be possible. Farther north across the Pacific Northwest/northern Intermountain West, scattered showers and storms are possible as multiple disturbances move through in the flow aloft. Across the central U.S., a weakening frontal boundary moving through the northern tier should be relatively dry and void of much moisture, but a few scattered showers or thunderstorms cannot be ruled out across the Upper Midwest on Monday, and back into the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley on Tuesday. South of the boundary though, a building ridge of high pressure keeps temperatures above normal the next few days. By Monday and Tuesday, high temperatures are forecast to be 5 to 15 degrees above normal across the Plains and extending into the eastern States as well.
