Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 246 AM EDT Thu Sep 22 2016 Valid 12Z Thu Sep 22 2016 - 12Z Sat Sep 24 2016 ...Flash flooding possible for portions of the Midwest... ...Low pressure system to bring severe thunderstorms and flash flooding to portions of the interior West... ...Locally heavy rain possible today across eastern portions of the Carolinas... Showers and thunderstorms will be possible today along a slow-moving frontal boundary from the Midwest to the Upper Great Lakes. Some of these storms could produce heavy rainfall. Given the already saturated ground over portions of these regions, flash flooding will be possible. An area of low pressure will move east along this frontal boundary, bringing a chance of showers and a few thunderstorms to the Northeast on Friday. A lingering stationary frontal boundary along with an area of low pressure will continue to bring areas of showers and thunderstorms to portions of the coastal Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic regions today and Friday. Some storms could produce locally heavy rainfall today across eastern portions of the Carolinas. Farther west, a strong early autumn storm system will continue to spread rain and thunderstorms across much of the interior West today into Friday. Anomalous moisture feeding into the system from the eastern Pacific Ocean will lead to the potential for heavy rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches for some areas, and flash flooding is possible. Additionally, the Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a slight risk of severe thunderstorms today across portions of Utah and extreme northern Arizona. As the upper-level low associated with the storm system moves eastward on Friday, snow levels will begin to lower, and rain may mix with or change to snow at the higher elevations from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. As a result of the upper-level low and the clouds and precipitation, high temperatures across most of the interior West are forecast to be 10 to 20 degrees below average through the end of the work week. By Friday afternoon, the low pressure system will begin to emerge from the Rockies into the High Plains. As a result, areas of showers and thunderstorms will be possible beginning Friday afternoon across the High Plains and eastward across the Plains into Saturday.
