Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 333 AM EDT Mon Sep 26 2016 Valid 12Z Mon Sep 26 2016 - 12Z Wed Sep 28 2016 ...Cold front approaching the East Coast with showers and storms... ...Cool and dry for much of the central plains and Rockies... The main weather maker across the continental U.S. over the next couple of days will be an elongated frontal boundary crossing the eastern third of the nation and extending down towards the Gulf Coast. A return to slightly more humid conditions can be expected across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by Monday night ahead of the front, with a band of showers and a few storms developing ahead of it. Of even greater interest will be a large upper level low that is forecast to track across the northern Great Lakes and Ohio Valley by the middle of the week. There will be a surface low in association with that as well, and unsettled weather conditions are likely with scattered to numerous showers developing in the vicinity of it. As the upper low slowly approaches the central Appalachian Mountains, it may be able to tap into enough moisture from the Atlantic Ocean to generate an organized area of moderate to locally heavy rainfall by the end of the forecast period over parts of the East Coast. Elsewhere, expect cool and mostly dry conditions across much of the central U.S. and extending westward towards the Rocky Mountains courtesy of the large surface high in place. A few showers will be possible over the Pacific Northwest with the passage of a cold front over Washington and Oregon. Showers will also be possible over mountainous areas of Arizona and New Mexico.
