The unseasonably warm weather across most of the central and eastern U.S. will continue today and into Friday. High pressure aloft will keep temperatures above average, with the most anomalous values expected across the northern plains where afternoon highs are forecast to be 15 to 25 degrees above average. Elsewhere, temperatures will also be 10 to 20 degrees above average across much of the eastern U.S. Cooler air will return by the weekend as a cold front makes its way across the Ohio/Tennessee valley and Appalachians into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Rain and a few thunderstorms will develop along and ahead of this boundary and will span from the southern Plains to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. A few snow showers are possible Friday morning for portions of northern New England, especially at the higher elevations. The southern flank of this front will will become stationary from the southern plains into the southern Rockies. This will likely aid in the development of showers and thunderstorms through Friday. Heavy rain will be possible, especially across the southern High Plains, where multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are possible. The risk for flash flooding will be elevated for this area through the weekend. A cold front will approach the Pacific Northwest by late Friday afternoon, bringing another round of rain this weekend.
